I'm a junior in Fire Protection Engineering by choice and a senior in Math on accident.
- I origonally chose ENEE (Electrical Engineering) because it kind of runs in the family. My father got his degree in electronics, and worked for many years as an electrician. And my grandfather worked in power distribution for a major power company. Not to mention the fact that I worked as a nuclear and marine electrician while in the Navy. But, I have already tried two other engineering fields thus far, including Electrical Engineering, and it just didn't seem to be the right one. I know it has high flexibility in the work place, and of course there's the higher salary demand. But, overall it just wasn't interesting to me, and I believe that's really all that matters. So, I chose to switch to
ENFP (Fire Protection Engineering) in my second semester at The University of Maryland. It is a high demand field with very limited out-sourcing. And unlike the others, it is very interesting to me. But, more importantly, it has an immediate impact on the lives of other people, which
is often not achieved by other engineering fields directly.
- Mathematics, on my long road through engineering, has just came along for the ride, and now has become my double major.
Background Info:
- I graduated from Central Catholic High School in Portland, OR.
- I joined the Naval Reserves a little after my 16th birthday, while still in high school, and then transferred to active duty Navy when I turned 18. I then finished out 5 years of active duty service at various commands throughout the country and abroad. After this I rejoined the Naval Reserves for 3 more years while attending college full time, until it demanded too much of my time. At which time I became a full time student.
- I earned two Associates of Science Degree's, one in Physics and the other in Mathematics, after leaving active duty with the Navy.
- I transferred into the University of Maryland in Fall 2004, from San Diego, CA. And I was directly admitted into the Electrical Engineering Program.
- I switched majors from Electrical Engineering to Fire Protection Engineering in Spring 2005.
